"We give free things out, we'll take one too, and it helps us out," Trump said during a news conference from the White House Monday.
The president is expected to accept a $400 million Boeing 747 jumbo jet from Qatar's royal family during his visit to the Middle East this week.
Trump said Qatar knew about Boeing's delays in delivering a new Air Force One aircraft and wanted to help, claiming that it wouldn't be a personal gift for him, but for the Department of Defense. He also said he wouldn't use the plane after he leaves office and that it would go to his future presidential library.
The Qatari government said the two countries have discussed the "possible transfer" of an aircraft to be used as Air Force One, but the "matter remains under review" and that no final decision has been made.
