1:37Now PlayingWhite House press secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized a Wednesday federal court ruling that blocked many of President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs, calling it "another example of judicial overreach."
"Three judges of the U.S. Court of International Trade disagreed and brazenly abused their judicial power to usurp the authority of President Trump," Leavitt said Thursday in a news briefing.
Shortly after the White House briefing, an appeals court temporarily blocked the decision, allowing the Trump administration to continue collecting tariffs.
The three judges on the international trade panel ruled late Wednesday that the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which Trump cited for ordering increases in taxes on imports, does not give the president unilateral authority to impose sweeping tariffs.
