3:24Now PlayingThe Trump administration is failing to protect college students from private universities that charge tuition in exchange for what are seen as valueless degrees, Sen. Dick Durbin, D- Ill., said on Tuesday at a Senate hearing with Education Secretary Linda McMahon about President Trump's 2026 budget requests.
“You're hollowing out the borrower defense agency within your own department. This is supposed to be the rescue for these students to finally get back on track and maybe go to a good school one way or the other,” Durbin said.
“First generation students are being exploited by these schools. They need your protection. They need our protection. They deserve it. They're doing the right thing. And unfortunately, you're reducing the number of people to enforce the law.”
McMahon said the Trump administration was using other methods to protect students, such as informing prospective students how much an education will cost them and how much a potential job will pay.
“Let's give upfront a little more information so that they actually have an understanding of what their opportunity in the marketplace can be,” McMahon said.
