President Donald Trump will counter Chinese influence in other countries mostly through “economic endeavors,” former National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said on Tuesday during his confirmation hearing to become UN ambassador.

“Of course we have to have a strong and capable military, but truly where he's seeking to win this competition, and we will win it, is through those economic endeavors,” Waltz said before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Waltz stepped down as National Security Advisor in May following criticism after he added a journalist to a Signal chat group used to discuss U.S. military attack plans on Yemen. Trump later nominated him to become ambassador to the United Nations.
