Minnesota has been the focus of the Trump administration in recent weeks, as new details emerged around a pandemic-era fraud scandal that implicated U.S. citizens of Somali descent.
On Tuesday, one day before the shooting, the Trump administration launched what it referred to as the largest federal immigration enforcement operation ever, deploying federal agents to Minnesota to for an immigration crackdown that they partially tied to the fraud allegations.
Walz, who has announced he will not run for reelection, said Thursday that with the deadly shooting, the federal government's efforts have "reached cruelness."
Speaking later at a White House press briefing, Vice President JD Vance called Walz a "joke," and said he didn't care about what Walz says. Vance claimed without evidence that the governor has "maybe" participated in fraud.
The vice president added that he only cared "about getting to the bottom of this fraud" and enforcing U.S. immigration laws.
