“Whether you like it or not, it's only as good as we are,” he said. “If NATO doesn't have us, NATO is not very strong.”
The president’s answer came during a news conference at the White House, where he was asked if he was committed to keeping the United States within the military alliance of 32 North American and European countries formed shortly after World War II.
The president’s comments come as he is set to meet with world leaders this week at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He recently called for a 10% tariff on European countries, and NATO allies, that are rallying to support Denmark against his calls for a U.S. takeover of Greenland, a semiautonomous Danish territory.
When questioned about opposition by Greenlanders to becoming a part of the U.S., Trump said, “When I speak to them, I’m sure they’ll be thrilled.”
