But journalist and award-winning Kashmiri novelist Mirza Waheed says this is the latest episode in a longer history of violence at the hands of Indian military. "To Kashmiris, India has always treated Kashmir as a colony," Waheed says. "You have to see this latest siege in the larger context of what happened in Kashmir all of these years, which is a tragic story of brutalization of the Kashmiri people."
