6:35Now PlayingIn the wake of Toni Morrison’s death, renowned activist Angela Davis reflects on the transformative power of Morrison’s writing and impact of her literature and art about the black experience. “She taught us, I think probably for the very first time, to imagine enslaved women and men with full lives, with complex subjectivities, with inferiority,” Davis says. “I think her work has literally revolutionized the way people all over the world think, not only about black people in the U.S., but how they imagine their own lives and their pasts and their futures.” They first met when Morrison approached Davis about writing an autobiography after Davis’s trial in 1972, marking the beginning of a lifelong friendship. Morrison died this week at the age of 88, due to complications with pneumonia.
