"Studies show suicide is higher in jails than in prisons," says Jeanne Theoharis, professor of political science at Brooklyn College, who points out that beneath the story of Jeffrey Epstein's suicide in New York's MCC jail, there is a wider social conversation to be had about the links between solitary confinement and suicide within the American carceral system. "There is something … counterintuitive and counterproductive [about] putting someone who is having mental health issues in solitary confinement, and yet that is often what happens," says Theoharis. Lawyer Lisa Bloom, who represents two of Epstein's victims, tweeted after Epstein's death that the victims would have preferred that he had lived so that he could be brought to justice.
