3:01Now PlayingIsrael announced that it would bar Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib from entering the country, sparking outcry from Democratic leaders and Palestinians. The discriminatory ban came after President Trump posted a tweet urging Israel to keep the progressive politicians out — the latest in a series of racist attacks against recently elected congresswomen of color, including Reps. Ayanna Pressley and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Though Democratic leaders including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have spoken out against the ban, Jewish Voice for Peace executive director Rebecca Vilkermerson says their remarks do not go far enough in defending the rights of Omar and Tlaib, and that they played a big part in the “demonization and delegitimization of these congresswomen, which resulted in these actions.” According to Vilkermerson, the lack of response by Democrats to the barring of entry to two congressmembers is reflective of a rift between “old-guard Democrats and the new Democrats” and an “absolute inability to hold Israel accountable for any of its human rights violations."
