4:39Now PlayingThe Supreme Court is hearing arguments in three cases that will determine whether LGBTQ people are protected under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex and national origin. This hearing comes amid a climate in the United States that is increasingly violent toward transgender women, and particularly Black transgender women. This year alone, at least 19 transgender women have been slain, the majority of whom were women of color. Actress and activist Laverne Cox says this is a collective trauma that transgender women of color share and one that is exacerbated by the administration's mounting attempts to roll back the rights of transgender people. "Now we’re coming out of the shadows. And as we come out of the shadows, people want to force us back into the dark," she says. "We are saying, 'No, we deserve a right to live in the light.'"
