With 45 diagnosed cases and 10 fatalities, Mayor Jenny Durkan has issued an emergency proclamation, but socialist city councilmember Kshama Sawant says that among Seattle residents, "there's a certain emergency proclamation fatigue ... because we have seen such emergency proclamations declared on other issues like homelessness — which are related to the dysfunctionality of the capitalist system — and nothing is being done to follow up on it." According to Sawant, emergency proclamations in Seattle historically have been used as a tool by "mostly status-quo corporate politicians who are trying to look like they're doing something — but there are very few follow-up steps." Because low-wage service workers are more vulnerable to the outbreak, with many being uninsured or under-insured, Sawant says that "we need to have a serious conversation about Medicare for All."
