3:35Now PlayingThe meatpacking industry has seen a growing number of infected workers in processing plants across the country — but last week, President Trump invoked the Defense Production Act to bar local governments from closing meat plants, declaring such facilities critical infrastructure. At least 20 meatpacking workers have died from COVID-19, and more than 5,000 have fallen ill from the disease. Latinx communities bear the brunt of these consequences, as they comprise a significant amount of the meatpacking workforce. "We stand with the workers," says Sindy Benavides, CEO of LULAC, the League of United Latin American Citizens. "We're asking for basic protections — protections that work, that help our community to keep the line flowing to make sure that all Americans are able to enjoy meat and pork and poultry."
