2:14Now PlayingOn Thursday, Israel’s military intercepted nearly two dozen boats traveling with the Global Sumud Flotilla as they worked to bring food and humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The vessels were chased down overnight by drones and military speedboats near the Greek island of Crete. Their radar was jammed as Israeli troops carrying assault rifles boarded the ships and ordered participants to their hands and knees. Some flotilla members had to be rescued after one boat was left to sink in international waters.
About 175 people were arrested, including Hannah Smith, who describes the violent raid, arrest and detention of herself and fellow activists. Two flotilla participants are still being detained without charges. Saif Abukeshek of Spain and Thiago Ávila of Brazi have been transferred to an Israeli prison, where they have launched a hunger strike.
Last year, Israel carried out similarly violent raids on a previous attempt by the Global Sumud Flotilla to break the Israeli siege of Gaza. Many of the 440 people arrested in those raids reported torture and abuse in Israeli custody.
