On Thursday, October 20th, 2016, Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte attended a conference in Beijing, China, in which he met with many Chinese leaders to announce his “separation” from the United States. This “separation” is both an economic and military one. The news has ramifications that span far beyond just the two nations directly involved, because of the central reason for the meeting happening to begin with, and that is the South China Sea.

Aggression over the South China sea has been happening for some time now. The problem is that China has essentially “created” islands that did not exist previously, far away from their actual coastline, to create EEZs (Exclusive Economic Zones). This means that the area of the “islands” and around them is controlled by the Chinese.

Control of the South China Sea is all good for China, but not so good for some of their neighbors, most specifically Brunei and Vietnam. Vietnam has been recently armed by the United States, and they have come on the record to say that they approve of the United States sending destroyers to SCS to make sure China assures “freedom of movement” there. Philippines was in the same spot, being armed by the United States and supporting their movement, but the SCS conflict could easily boil over into war. If the Philippines allow the United States to continue exercises in and around SCS, then China could be provoked to attack them because of the US presence….the same way Japan attacked Philippines in World War 2.

Duterte has also had issues with Obama himself. The mainstream media printed a false statement that was derogatory towards Obama that allegedly came from Duterte. It was a bad translation and Duterte was not given the opportunity to really fight back against it in the mainstream media. This incident caused a scheduled meeting between Obama and Duterte to be cancelled at ASEAN, a conference of South East Asian nations.

So the question that has to be asked here is very simple. Why would Duterte be what is essentially a puppet for Western interests when Western nations are struggling financially, struggling to keep their nation sovereign and away from foreign invaders, and last but not least, can’t even discern fact from fiction when it comes to dealing with the media. Some would say Duterte signed a deal with the devil when he accepted Chinese deals … but what other choice did he have?
