Peat fires burning in Sumatra produced a carbon monoxide plume visible from space in this series of data images from NASA's space borne AIRS instrument.

Although it is a weak greenhouse gas, carbon monoxide has important indirect effects on global warming. The reaction of CO with other chemical compounds in Earth's atmosphere increases the global warming potential of greenhouse gases, such as methane and carbon dioxide.

The white arrow points to Sumatra. Carbon monoxide levels shown here are as high as 320 parts per billion (ppb), which is way off the accompanying color scale.

UPDATE: According to local news reports, some of the more intense fires are burning in the Giam Siak Kecil-Bukit Batu biosphere reserve and were deliberately set to clear land for palm oil plantations. The Giam Siak Kecil-Bukit Batu biosphere reserve contains just over 700,000 hectares of peat forest that sustains a wide range of plant and animal species including the Sumatra tiger, elephant, tapir, and sun bear.
