Inertial confinement fusion compresses a target from all sides using lasers. The compression has to be perfectly uniform, like squeezing a balloon equally from every angle. Any imbalance creates instabilities where the plasma shoots out.

But here's what matters. When the laser hits the target, it creates a plasma cloud with temperature and density gradients running perpendicular to each other. That misalignment triggers the Biermann battery effect, which generates magnetic fields spontaneously. Physicists believe this same mechanism creates magnetic fields across the universe, in supernovas and galaxies. The fields weren't there at the Big Bang, so they're arising from plasma itself, essentially from nothing.

If magnetic fields can appear and amplify on their own, where is that energy coming from? Relativity makes it stranger. Every particle in the plasma exists in its own frame of reference. Some particles might see others moving faster than light relative to them, which changes the physics entirely.

If fields arise from nowhere, there has to be a reservoir. Fusion isn't just compressing atoms. It's tapping into the zero-point field, pulling energy from the vacuum.

What else becomes possible when the vacuum isn't empty?
