When they do the vacuum fluctuations couple to the tunneling current. Because the situation is asymmetric the fluctuations move in one preferential direction. That generates a unidirectional force from nothing. Conventional physics says this is impossible. You cannot create momentum outside a closed system. But that assumes vacuum fluctuations do not exist. They do. Quantum electrodynamics requires them or the math breaks. And the lowest ground state is not actually the lowest. The energy they think is not there is infinite.
