1:42Now PlayingMARTA is confirming that a bus operator shortage and high absenteeism are behind ongoing delays and cancellations on some routes, particularly in the Forest Park and College Park areas.
Riders on routes 55, 89 and 194 say waits of an hour or more have become routine, with some reporting daily cancellations that force them to use rideshare services to get to work.
One rider told Atlanta News First the delays cost him his job. MARTA says the staffing shortage dates to the COVID-19 pandemic and that high absenteeism among current operators is a primary driver of the gaps.
The agency says it has added attendance bonuses, is hosting job fairs and is expanding recruiting efforts.
The issues come as MARTA's board prepares to vote on a new permanent CEO.
