On September 19, 2024, Letcher County Kentucky Sheriff Shawn "Mickey" Stines, 43, walked into Judge Kevin Mullins' (54) chambers and sh0t him several times, leading to his death. The event was caught on video, as there was a camera in chambers. The two were close friends, and Stines had worked as the Judge's bailiff for several years before being elected Sheriff in 2018. In fact, the two had been out to lunch together shortly before the incident. It is reported that once in chambers, Stines called his daughter from his cell phone, and then called his daughter from the Judge's cellphone. It is unclear what was said, as the video contains no audio. Motive is currently unknown, but the Sheriff had given a deposition in a Federal civil lawsuit 3 days prior, in which it is alleged that a Sheriff's Deputy named Ben Fields had been committing heinous acts in the Judge's chambers and elsewhere, while on duty, to which Fields in fact pled guilty.
Join me as we break down the Preliminary Hearing for the Defendant Stines, as well as the Federal lawsuit that may or may not have been a factor in this horrific crime.
