Decadence. Exhibitionism. Bland veal sausages.
Welcome to Fasching, the Munich carnival of debauchery that precedes Lent. The good folk of the city are encouraged to drink as much as they can, behave as outrageously as they can, dress in jaw-dropping costumes. Married couples go their separate ways for the night, whips are cracked in public squares and through it all floats Alan Whicker, who seems to be enjoying the spectacle.
There’ll be a lot of forgiveness to be prayed for come the end.
Clip taken from Whicker’s World: Fasching in Munich, originally broadcast on BBC One on Saturday 30 April, 1966.
