After the gruelling run-up to Christmas day, shop workers clocked out, ready for a well-earned rest. Across the country there was church-going, the traditional brisk Christmas swim in the bitterly cold Hampstead swimming ponds, the annual fancy-dress cycling event at Brookmans park, and for many people, Christmas wouldn't be complete without a trip to the pantomime, or the football.
