We live in an overwhelmingly visual age. There is more pressure than ever to present a certain image of ourselves—be that on social media or in a company-wide video call.

In this clip from the upcoming Mini Philosophy interview, the philosopher Heather Widdows makes the case for our other senses, namely touch. There is an intimacy to touch that other senses lack, and when both children and adults are deprived of touch, they suffer for it. In many countries, touch is almost entirely reserved for medical settings or romantic partners.

For Widdows, that’s sad. It’s a problem.
