8:06Now PlayingThe more powerful technology becomes, the less we’ll need each other — at least, that’s the narrative often repeated in tech-forward online spaces. But Google DeepMind’s Org Development Lead Martin Gonzalez might consider that line of thinking too reductive. In fact, he argues that tech companies that fail to invest in human relationships proactively are making a costly mistake.
In this video lesson, Gonzalez breaks down the weaknesses companies can develop when they skimp on cultivating strong, healthy working relationships.
The Human Factor
Innovators often dismiss the “people side” of the business. But studies suggest companies often fail because of it.
It’s tempting to blame this on one slight mistake. But we often make lots of them over time:
Hiring the wrong person
Not being clear about norms
Allowing individuals to create a toxic environment
Modeling distracting behavior
2 Models to Compare
The Star Model: Hiring high-potential individuals and allowing them to self-organize. Star Models have a higher failure rate but higher growth potential.
The Commitment Model: Hiring people with values and skills that fit the existing team. Commitment Models have a lower failure rate but lower growth potential.
2 Implications to Consider
Your early decisions matter. Go slow at the beginning to prepare your team for a bright future.
Sudden model shifts often fail. Don’t abruptly reshape your team. This can alienate early employees. Instead, think about how you might spin off a different unit and start fresh. Ask:
How might we set up the team to achieve our goals?
How do we do that well today?
How can we stay consistent as we hire, interact, and define our culture?
