58:10Now PlayingPresident Donald Trump spoke Wednesday at the 38th Annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service in front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The ceremony honored the 228 law enforcement personnel who were killed in the line of duty during 2018. The service took place during Police Week, when a variety of events are held to honor law enforcement who have died on duty. President John F. Kennedy first designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day in 1962.
West Virginia has lowered its flags to half-staff for Peace Officers Memorial Day. Gov. Jim Justice says U.S. flags and state flags on state-owned buildings will be lowered from day to dusk Wednesday. The Republican governor says his order is in accordance with a presidential proclamation for the day. Justice says he encourages citizens to honor federal, state and local officers killed or disabled in the line of duty.
