4:12Now PlayingSenate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says US President Donald Trump is unlikely to be convicted and removed from office in the event of an impeachment trial, at least based on what is known now.
The Kentucky Republican told reporters Tuesday that "if it were today, I don't think there's any question" that any impeachment trial "would not lead to a removal."
It takes two-thirds of the Senate to convict a president and remove him from office. That means at least 20 Republicans would have to vote to convict Trump if he is impeached by the Democratic-controlled House.
"The question is, how long does the Senate want to take?" McConnell asked.
He added that Democratic presidential candidates might prefer to spend their time campaigning in Iowa and New Hampshire instead.
Other lawmakers on Capitol Hill Tuesday were divided on whether the identity of the whistleblower should be made public, the anonymous whistleblower who first expressed concern about Trump's call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
Depositions released this week show Republican lawmakers taking steps to try to undermine the credibility of witnesses in the impeachment inquiry, and others have sought to publicly unmask the whistleblower whose summer complaint served as the catalyst for the impeachment probe.
U.S. whistleblower laws exist to protect the identities and careers of people who bring forward accusations of wrongdoing by government officials.
