1:07Now PlayingRussia continued on Friday an operation to release 50 beluga-whales from a so-called "whale jail", a marine containment facility in Srednyaya Bay, near Vladivostok.
Throughout Tuesday and Wednesday, Russian oceanographers loaded the first part of 19 belugas onto two research-vessels that transported them to the release place in Uspenia Bay in Japanese Sea, 100 kilometers away from the "jail".
On Friday, scientists began releasing the whales.
Scientists completed their final veterinary checks and installed satellite tags on three of the animals.
Ninety belugas and 12 orcas were originally reported to have been kept in a marine containment facility in Srednyaya Bay.
Activists raised the alarm late last year when the whales were captured off the Pacific Coast.
