5:01Now PlayingAn apparent error during Steve Harvey's fifth stint as host of the Miss Universe Competition, Sunday (8 DEC. 2019) turned out not to be a mistake at all - as the organization confirmed Miss Philippines Gazini Ganados did win the 2019 National Costume competition.
During the broadcast, the comedian announced Miss Philippines as the winner of the costume contest, as a still image of Ganados in the winning outfit was displayed for viewers.
The camera then cut to Harvey standing with Miss Malaysia, Shweta Sekhon, as he described elements of her outfit. She corrected him, taking the microphone to say, "It's not Philippines. It's Malaysia."
Harvey blamed the teleprompter for the apparent flub.
The Miss Universe team Monday tweeted their congratulations for Ganados, as they cleared up the misunderstanding.
"@IAmSteveHarvey had it right: Miss Universe Philippines Gazini Ganados is the winner of #MissUniverse2019 National Costume competition! Congratulations, Gazini."
