16:20Now PlayingPrime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Tuesday confirmed that tourists from Australia, the US, the UK, China and Malaysia are among those missing or injured following a volcanic explosion on New Zealand's White Island.
The volcano erupted on Monday with a towering blast of ash and scalding steam as tourists were exploring the moon-like surface.
Waikato Police superintendent Bruce Bird confirmed Tuesday that of the 47 people who went onto the island, five had been killed, 31 were in the hospital, a further eight were still missing and three had been discharged from hospital overnight.
He said the eight people missing were presumed to be dead.
Bird told a news conference in Whakatane that the focus now would now rest on attempting to return to the island to recover the missing, but only when it was safe enough for rescuers to do so.
The prime minister gave her condolences to those who had lost or were missing family or friends.
"We share in your unfathomable grief at the moment in time and in your sorrow," she said.
"No signs of life have been seen at any point," said Ardern, referring to police reconnaissance flights over the island following the eruption.
The terrifying disaster immediately raised questions of why people were allowed to visit the island some 30 miles (50 kilometres) off mainland New Zealand after scientists had noted an uptick in volcanic activity in recent weeks.
The eruption sent a plume of steam and ash about 12,000 feet (3,660 meters) into the air.
