0:47Now PlayingCyclone Amphan battered the east Indian states of Odisha and West Bengal on May 20, leaving a path of destruction and at least a dozen people dead. A further eight people were reported to have died in neighboring Bangladesh.
This footage shows debris and uprooted trees on Bidhan Sarani, a main road in Kolkata. In a tweet during the storm, the source, Boria Majumdar, said: “The city is ravaged. The state is devastated. Every citizen will have a role to play to rebuild Bengal in the middle of Covid. And we will. Just let this trauma end tonight.”
The Times of India reported that the cyclone had “ravaged” Kolkata and several other areas in West Bengal.
Thousands of people were left homeless in India and Bangladesh by Amphan, the most powerful cyclone in more than a decade. India’s National Disaster Management Authority warned people not to enter damaged buildings or floodwaters.
The India Meteorological Department said that Amphan brought wind speeds of 155-165 km/h (96-103 mph), with wind gusts of up to 185 km/h (114 mph) as it moved over the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast.
