2:28Now PlayingWhite House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany defended President Donald Trump's tweet earlier this week peddling another unfounded conspiracy theory, this time trying to raise suspicions about a 75-year-old protester who was hospitalized after being shoved by police and falling.
Asked about the tweet at Wednesday's White House briefing, McEnany said the president "does not regret" what he said. "The president was asking questions about an interaction in a video clip he saw. And the president has the right to ask those questions," she added.
Trump tweeted without evidence that the confrontation between police and a protester in Buffalo, New York, may have been a "set up," once again siding with police officers over demonstraters.
"Where he stands is squarely with law enforcement," McEnany told reporters. "He was making no judgments, not condoning violence, not saying what happened in this case with these two officers was right or wrong. But he's standing back and saying we need to ask questions before we destroy lives and convict people in the court of public opinion."
The press secretary was also asked if President Trump's announcement that he planned to withdraw some U.S. troops from Germany was a response to German Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision not to come to the United States in June for a G-7 meeting during a global pandemic.
McEnany brushed off that idea. "He never makes decisions to punish certain world world leaders. He acts in the best interests of the United States," she said.
