2:36Now PlayingBloomberg QuickTake's Glow series explores how tea ceremonies can be a form of meditation and lead to a path of spirituality and mindfulness.
Baelyn Elspeth is a practitioner of Cha Dao or “the way of tea”. She explains how tea can be a form of meditation. “Tea as a way of life and as a meditative process can be a daily practice of slowing down, and really just giving ourselves the time and the space to be without doing.”
Wu De, the founder of the Global Tea Hut, explain how this is different from drinking a regular cup of tea
"Tea drinking is not all that life transformative and tea ceremony is. When you have a meditative approach and a kind of reverence towards tea ceremony and you’re brewing and drinking in that way and then you combine that with the right types of plant this practice can be extremely powerful.”
Baelyn says the first bowl of tea she had in ceremony felt like a deep return to herself. “The next morning I just woke up and I was like.. I just want to drink more tea! What’s happening? How could a little bowl of tea give so much?”
Wu De adds, “There are lots of different ways and lineages and they all have their power and strength. But for us it’s just an opportunity to relax and connect with your body and with other human beings in a mindful kind of communal space.”
Ryan Grimes, participated in a tea ceremony and says he found it to be very meditative. “I could just really drop into the present moment while I was there. Even though we’re doing it in silence we’re really connecting with the other people, in a very deep way without words.”
Wu De says any old tea will do “if you show up with the right reverence and approach and mindfulness. However there are more what we call living teas or teas produced and grown in the right way that are much more conducive to this practice.”
He explains what makes tea so special.
“It’s a powerful plant. It’s an ancient plant that people have been using for thousands of years in their spiritual cultivation. At the same time it’s also become a world-wide beverage, the second most consumed substance on Earth. One of my favorite tea quotes of all time comes from Winnie the Pooh. And Piglet said to Christopher Robbin, Come inside and let’s see if a pot of tea can make the world a better place."
