1:05Now PlayingGeorgia Governor Brian Kemp is doubling down on his fight over the need for a mask mandate in the state's capitol.
"I know that many well intentioned and well informed Georgians want a mask mandate and while we all agree that wearing a mask is effective, I'm confident that Georgians don't need a mandate to do the right thing," said Kemp Friday.
"I know that Georgians can rise to this challenge and they will. And I know that Georgians will do their part to defeat this deadly virus."
Kemp filed a lawsuit against Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms claiming she has overstepped her authority and must obey Kemp’s executive orders under state law.
"Mayor Bottoms mask mandate cannot be enforced," said Kemp.
"I refuse to sit back and watch as disastrous policies threaten the lives and livelihoods of our citizens. We will fight to stop reckless actions and put people over pandemic politics."
The suit comes a day after Kemp clarified his executive orders to expressly block Atlanta and at least 14 other local governments from requiring people to wear face coverings.
Kemp’s order was met with defiance Thursday by Bottoms and other mayors, who said they would continue enforcing their mandates and were prepared to go to court.
