1:26Now PlayingThe United Nations humanitarian affairs chief warned that failure to address the social and economic impact of the new coronavirus in the world's poorest counties would risk "a series of human tragedies more brutal and more destructive than any of the direct impacts of the virus itself."
Mark Lowcock was addressing a World Health Organization news conference on the day of the publishing of the third COVID-19 Global Humanitarian Response Plan.
The plan addresses the immediate humanitarian needs caused or exacerbated by COVID-19 in 63 priority countries with existing humanitarian crisis.
Speaking via video-link on Friday, Lowcock said that estimates showed that the cost of "protecting the poorest 10% of the global population from the worst effects of the pandemic global recession is about $90 billion."
Lowcock also called on wealthier countries to boost their funding for poorer nations or risk creating "a generation's worth of tragic and exportable problems."
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that up to 132 million more people may go hungry in 2020 because of the impact of the pandemic and it's related restrictions.
