2:01Now PlayingPresident Donald Trump is pledging to eliminate an Obama-era program designed to promote fair housing, saying it is "destroying our great suburbs" and warning that under Democratic control, suburbia will "go to hell."
The president made the comments on the White House South Lawn Thursday during a speech on deregulation efforts.
Trump said the fair housing rule is designed "to eliminate single family zoning" and "destroy the value of houses and communities already built."
He said if his opponent, presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden is elected, suburban homes "will go down in value and crime rates will rapidly rise."
"And what will be the end result is you will totally destroy the beautiful suburbs. Suburbia will be no longer as we know it," Trump said.
Just months before November's election, the Trump campaign is growing increasingly concerned about polls showing the president's weakening support among suburban voters, particularly women.
The president also warned that Democrats will continue taking down statues and monuments of prominent American figures.
"They want George Washington out. They want Thomas Jefferson out. They want Abraham Lincoln out. They want abolitions out. They don't know what they want. They just want to destroy our country," he said.
