Sep 4, 20201:52Now PlayingThe World Health Organization (WHO) director-general on Friday warned against "vaccine nationalism" amid attempts around the world to develop an effective vaccine against the coronavirus.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also said that when a coronavirus vaccine is developed, it must be a priority to vaccinate key workers in all countries.
"Initially, when supply is limited, priority must be given to vaccinating essential workers and those most at risk, including older people and those with underlying conditions", Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
He also said it was essential to "vaccinate some people in all countries rather than all people in some countries".
"This is not just a moral imperative and a public health imperative."
The United Nations health agency also made clear it would not recommend any COVID-19 vaccine before it is proved safe and effective.
Adhanom Ghebreyesus' remarks came even as Russia and China have started using their experimental vaccines before long-term studies have been completed and other countries have proposed streamlining authorisation procedures.
