2:10Now PlayingA passenger plane retrofitted with a hydrogen-powered engine completed its first flight on September 24. The six-seater aircraft completed a 19-mile demonstration around Cranfield Airport in England.
The aircraft was developed by ZeroAvia. The company told Storyful: “Hydrogen powered aircraft have flown before. However, those aircraft were demonstrator aircraft that were not designed to carry passengers. The retrofitted 6-seater Piper Malibu airframe used by ZeroAvia for yesterday’s flight is a type of aircraft that delivers passenger services around the world, showing passengers could be boarding a zero emissions aircraft in the years to come.”
Val Miftakhov, ZeroAvia’s founder, told Sky News: “What we’re doing is replacing fossil fuel engines with what’s called hydrogen electric engines.”
This footage shows the aircraft being prepared, before taking flight.
