1:52Now PlayingDemocratic Sen. Cory Booker says the rush to push through the confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett "is not normal," the process should wait and let the "American people decide."
"Nothing about this today is normal. This is not normal," said Booker.
"What is going on in America today in the midst of a deadly pandemic and an ongoing an election, having a rushed Supreme Court nomination hearing is not normal and we cannot normalize it."
The New Jersey senator's comments came Monday during the opening day of the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on Barrett.
Booker and fellow Senate Democrats have branded Supreme Court nominee Barrett a threat to Americans’ health care during the coronavirus pandemic.
Republicans are confident the fast tracked hearing will end with a Senate vote confirming Barrett to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg before Election Day.
Republican senators called President Donald Trump’s pick a thoughtful judge with impeccable credentials.
"People are voting right now. The American people should decide," said Booker.
"I will not be voting to confirm Judge Barrett's nomination."
