2:07Now PlayingBritish Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Monday that England will be moved to a three-tiered alert level system for COVID-19.
Under the new system, the country will be divided into medium, high and very high alert levels with different restrictions applying.
Areas falling under the medium alert level will continue to follow the rule of six and 10:00 pm hospitality closing time.
The high alert level adds a ban to household mixing indoors including support bubbles.
"In these areas, the rule of six will continue to apply outdoors, where it is harder for the virus to spread in public spaces as well as private gardens," Johnson told Parliament.
The very high alert level will apply where transmission rates are rising most rapidly and where the NHS could soon be under "unbearable pressure" without further restrictions, Johnson said.
"In these areas, the government will set a baseline of prohibiting social mixing indoors and in private gardens, and I am sorry to say, closing pubs and bars," the prime minister told MP's.
Johnson said the government would work with local leaders on additional measures which should be taken, warning this could lead to further restrictions on the hospitality, leisure, entertainment or personal care sectors.
"But retail, schools and universities will remain open," he stressed.
From Wednesday the Liverpool city region will be moved to the very high alert level, Johnson said, after agreement was reached with local leaders.
Coronavirus infections are on the rise again across the U.K., with northwest and northeast England seeing the biggest surges.
