0:58Now PlayingNorth Korea on Monday announced a new work campaign ahead of a congress of the ruling Workers' Party scheduled for January 2021.
The announcement of the 80-day campaign came at a massive rally which filled Kim Il Sung Square in central Pyongyang, less than 48 hours after the same square was packed for celebrations of the Workers' Party 75th anniversary.
Thousands of people stood in neat lines listening to speeches from senior officials, but not the nation's leader, Kim Jong Un.
After the speeches, they followed the format of similar rallies by marching through the top of square with banners carrying slogans.
North Korea has a habit of exhorting its people to work harder, often in specific campaigns lasting tens or hundreds of days.
The last time these work campaigns hit the people was around the landmark ruling party Congress held in 2016, the first formal party top level meeting in decades.
The work campaign means at the very least people have to talk about it all the time, and try to show that they are doing something to satisfy the state's demands.
North Korea is currently in the ninth month of an international lockdown to combat the spread of coronavirus.
It shut down its international borders in late January this year, and few people have crossed them since then.
