as posted by the channelJesse Katayama, a Japanese tourist in Peru left stranded by the Covid-19 pandemic, was given a solo visit of Machu Picchu by local authorities several months after originally trying to see the ruins.
Katayama originally tried to visit Machu Picchu in March and had been staying in the nearby town of Aguas Calientes ever since.
"March 16 is when Peru went into a nationwide lockdown. I couldn't even travel within the country. I've been here since then so 7 months I've been living in this town," Katayama tells Bloomberg's Kurumi Mori.
"From way below I was looking at it every single day. But after getting up close and climbing the mountain and being there at the ruins it as way bigger than I expected."
He added, "The locals pushed the government and local officials on my behalf to let me go see it so this really is thanks to them. All of that just really moved me."
Katayama kept himself busy while under lockdown.
He started practicing yoga and teaching boxing classes to local kids. Katayama says he's a boxing instructor, so carries around a glove and mitts everywhere he travels.
Katayama was the first visitor to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in seven months, which closed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
