as posted by the channelBack on the campaign trail with just over two weeks before election day, President Donald Trump repeatedly criticized Dr. Anthony Fauci and attacked his Democratic rival Joe Biden for wanting to follow the advice of the top infectious disease expert in the United States.
Trump is facing intense pressure to turn around his campaign, hoping for the type of last-minute surge that revived his candidacy four years ago and plunging into an aggressive travel schedule despite the pandemic.
In an airport rally in Prescott Arizona, Trump told the crowd that they, and he, were "getting tired of the pandemic." He also attacked the news cable channel CNN for covering the COVID-19 pandemic, calling the network "dumb bastards," and insisting that viewers weren't buying it.
But his lack of a consistent message, newly surging virus cases and his attacks on experts like Fauci could undermine his final efforts to appeal to voters outside his most loyal base.
"You know, Biden wants to lock down," Trump said. "He wants to listen to Dr. Fauci."
The president insisted during his campaign rally that he did not follow the advice of Fauci against imposing a ban on travel from China. "I'm closing it, I saved thousands of lives. "
Trump repeatedly, and falsely, claims to have banned travel from China. He restricted it.
The U.S. restrictions that took effect Feb. 2 continued to allow travel to the U.S. from the Chinese territories of Hong Kong and Macao. The Associated Press reported that more than 8,000 Chinese and foreign nationals based in the two locales entered the U.S. in the first three months after the travel restrictions were imposed.
The doctor is both respected and popular, and Trump's rejection of scientific advice on the pandemic has already drawn bipartisan condemnation.
Repeating that he liked women, Trump defended his use of the phrase "suburban housewives," and says he has widespread support from suburban women voters heading into he election.
