1:42Now PlayingUK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday warned people not to get their hopes up too soon for a speedy roll-out of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, following the decision by British regulators to approve the drug.
He told parliament the approval was "fantastic news" and said the vaccine would start to be made available from next week, starting with priority groups.
Opposition leader Keir Starmer pointed out that the number of people in those priority groups exeeded the initial roll-out of 400,000 doses.
Johnson replied that it was "very, very important that people do not get their hopes up too soon about the speed with which we will be able to roll out this vaccine."
In the meantime, he said, people needed to continue following the rules to curb the spread of the virus.
"It is not the end of our national struggle against coronavirus," he told lawmakers during prime minister's questions.
He said vaccination against the virus would not be made compulsory.
