"Towards the middle and end of December, we will be having available about 40 million doses of vaccines for 20 million people that will be allocated to the states according to population.," Dr. Anthony Fauci said during an online briefing Tuesday hosted by Colorado Gov. Jared Polis.
On Monday, Moderna Inc. said it will ask U.S. and European regulators to allow emergency use of its COVID-19 vaccine as new study results confirm the shots offer strong protection. Pfizer is also seeking approval for its vaccine and hopes to begin administering shots in the U.S. in December.
Fauci urged Coloradans to get vaccinated as doses become more widely available to the general public in April and into the summer months.
Gov. Polis is among those who has tested positive for the coronavirus. The governor said in a statement Saturday night that he and his partner, Marlon Reis, both have COVID-19 and are asymptomatic. "I am grateful to report that both of us continue to do well. Very mild symptoms," Polis said during the briefing with Fauci. Polis had started quarantining Wednesday after he said he was exposed to the virus.
The state has been hit with a substantial spike in COVID-19 cases. One in 41 Colorado residents are believed to be contagious. Polis said he will continue to serve the state while isolating. He urged residents to wear masks and keep 6 feet apart in public.
The pandemic has killed more than 2,500 people in Colorado and infected more than 228,000, straining the state’s emergency hospital capacity.
The virus is blamed for over 267,000 deaths and more than 13.4 million confirmed infections in the U.S. The country on average is seeing more than 160,000 new cases per day and over 1,400 deaths - a toll on par with what the nation witnessed in mid-May, when New York City was the epicenter.
A record 90,000 people were in the hospital with the virus in the U.S. as of Sunday, pushing many medical institutions to the limit.
The coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms for most people. But for some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness or death.
