Dec 4, 20201:16Now PlayingThe world is bracing for a new wave of Covid-19 infections, as the coronavirus pandemic has infected more than 65 million people and killed more than 1.5 million globally since late January.
Efforts many countries took to stamp out the pneumonia-like illness led to entire nations enforcing lockdowns, widespread halts of international travel, mass layoffs and battered financial markets.
Recent attempts to revive social life and financial activities have resulted in another surge in cases and hospitalizations, though new drugs and improved care may help more people who get seriously ill survive.
Nations across Europe are pushing ahead with fast-track Covid-19 jab programs, even as significant proportions of the public from France to Sweden remain opposed to the idea. The U.K. is hoping to inoculate millions of Britons before year-end, while Spain aims at vaccinating up to 20 million people by June. Sweden expects to get enough doses next quarter to immunize a fifth of the population.
The U.S. posted another day of record Covid-19 infections and deaths, as overburdened hospitals around the nation brace for a surge in cases after Thanksgiving. Switzerland added the U.S., Poland and parts of Italy to its list of countries requiring travelers to quarantine. Poland’s virus death toll approached 20,000, while Hungary, Serbia and Slovenia saw record fatalities.
The U.K. reported a decline in the reproduction range, or R number, for the virus’s spread in the country. In Asia, Japan’s Osaka prefecture raised its alert to the highest level following an increase in serious cases. South Korea’s number of newly confirmed cases climbed to the highest since early March.
