He added that almost a quarter of those over the age of 80 had received a jab.
Johnson announced a tough new stay-at-home order for England on Monday, which won't be reviewed until at least mid-February.
On Tuesday, he explained the rising infection rates had left the government with "no choice" but to impose a third lockdown.
Prof. Chis Whitty, England's Chief Medical Officer, said across the country roughly one in 50 people had the coronavirus, "quite a very large number indeed."
He added that there had been an increase of the new variant of the virus outside the fastest-growing areas of eastern England, London and the southeast.
