1:12Now PlayingNew York Governor Andrew Cuomo is calling on residents in the state's Capitol region to contact health authorities if they believe they have been exposed to a new highly-contagious variant of COVID-19, which was first detected in the state at a jewelery store in Saratoga Springs.
Health officials warn the variant, which was first identified in England last month, does not appear more deadly, but can spread more easily and quickly among the population.
Cuomo said Tuesday that he was advised the new variant could quickly "overtake" other variants if not stopped.
He critized the federal government did not follow other countries by not putting a COVID testing requirement on all travelers arriving from the United Kingdom after the variant was identified.
