0:36Now PlayingStudents and employees at the University of California San Diego now have another option for required COVID-19 tests. Test kits are now available through vending machines on campus.
The kits are being distributed through 11 vending machines, according to a report from KGTV. The kits are free and contain a swab and vile in which the test sample is to be returned within 72 hours. Results are supposed to be back in less than two days, according to the KGTV report.
Prior to vending machine access, students were getting tests done by appointment at a campus testing station. Students can now get the test kits for self-administered coronavirus testing at vending machines located near residence halls on campus. .
The University says eventually the vending machines will replace in-person testing at the campus COVID test site, the KGTV report said.
Meanwhile, most of California's population remains under a broad stay-at-home order as hospital ICU capacity dwindles. In hard-hit Los Angeles County, the total COVID-19 death toll has reached 10,850 and confirmed cases topped 818,000. The county reported more than 7,700 people hospitalized, including 21% in ICUs.
