0:59Now PlayingPresident Joe Biden will sign an executive action reinstating COVID-19 travel restrictions on non-U.S. travelers from Brazil, Ireland, the United Kingdom and 26 other European countries that allow travel across open borders, the White House announced Monday.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki also confirmed that South Africa would be added to the restricted list because of concerns about a variant of the virus that has spread beyond that nation.
“This isn’t the time to be lifting restrictions on international travel,” Psaki said.
Top U.S. infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci called Biden's decision “prudent” in a round of television interviews Monday.
Biden is reversing an order from President Donald Trump in his final days in office that called for the relaxation of the travel restrictions as of Tuesday. Trump's move was made in conjunction with a new requirement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that all international travelers to the U.S. obtain a negative test for COVID-19 within three days of boarding their flight.
Psaki also announced that the Biden White House will be holding COVID briefings three times a week, starting Wednesday, featuring medical experts.
She told reporters that Biden was continually involved in efforts to get legislation crafted on Capitol Hill for a COVID rescue package.
The White House also condemned the widespread arrests of Russians in the wake of opposition leader Alexei Navalny's detention.
Mass rallies took place Saturday in over 100 Russian cities in what observers said was the largest outpouring of anger in years, and Navalny's supporters urged protesters to keep up the pressure.
