0:40Now PlayingThe World Health Organisation on Tuesday accused wealthy nations of "vaccine nationalism" and urged them to ensure coronavirus vaccines are also made widely available for poorer countries.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in closing remarks to the agency's executive board in Geneva: "It's in every nation's own interests to support vaccine equity."
"As we speak, rich countries are rolling out vaccines, while the world's least-developed countries watch and wait," Tedros said.
He said the world faces a "catastrophic moral failure" if it does not aim for vaccine equity and said studies show such policies could cost global economies trillions of dollars, about half in the wealthiest economies.
Tedros also reiterated a challenge to the world: "Together, we must ensure that vaccination of health workers and older people is underway in all countries within the first 100 days of this year."
